The Best Motorcycles of 2018

A brand new year is right around the corner, and soon we will be saying goodbye to 2018. As with any new beginning, it’s beneficial to take a look back on the things we’ve learned and loved in the recent past. With that said, it’s time to take a look back at some of the most popular bikes, newsworthy releases, and the all-around best motorcycles in 2018.

Best Touring Motorcycle of 2018 Honda Gold Wing Tour

Honda Gold Wing Touring motorcycles are obvious contenders for some of the best touring motorcycles of all time, and the release of the 2018 Gold Wing Tour was, not surprisingly, one of the most talked about events in the touring motorcycle sector.

The bike was touted as being the product of 43 years of refinement and rebuilding from the road up. The agile touring machine was over 85 pounds lighter than those who came before and boasted the famous horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine that is as smooth as it is powerful. The design is distinctly Gold Wing, and for the first time in the model’s history, the 2018 DCT models came complete with a smooth, quick-shifting 7-Speed Automatic DCT Transmission.

The 2018 BMW RNineT Urban G/S

The 2018 BMW RNineT Urban G/S is a standard motorcycle that gives a well-deserved styling nod to its predecessor, the 1980 BMW R80G/S. If you are no stranger to motorcycle history, or BMW in particular, you will recall that the R80G/S blazed – pardon the pun – the trail for adventure bikes that we know and love today.

The throwback style has proven to make a resurgence in the market, with such examples being the ever-successful fellow 2018 releases Triumph Bonneville Bobber, Royal Enfield Interceptor 650, and Ducati Scrambler 1100. Bikes which, to avoid the risk of talking all day, I will list as honorable mentions to my list of “Best Throwback Bikes of 2018.”

The 2018 Kawasaki H2 SX

2018 Kawasaki H2 SX, a supercharged sport touring bike that excels in outright power and obvious speed, the 600cc bike nails the output and power of a much larger bike. The bike has masterfully combined the key features of hypersport, sport touring, and supersport bikes into a machine that can handle street and distance rides.

The H2 SX is sporty, yet comfortable enough to accommodate longer trips, both of the solo and the 2-up variety, with the entire package being able to handle a variety of riding situations. The body design and engineering are recognizably Kawasaki, with the balanced supercharged engine delivering premium performance to conquer everything from the urban grid to the open road.

The 2018 Suzuki GSX250R

We can’t forget about the best beginner motorcycles of 2018, and the one clocking in as the best on my sports bike list is the Suzuki GSX250R. The machine released as the year model for 2018 is a small-displacement sports bike that was created to focus on practicality for riders.

The bike, as stated by the president of Suzuki Motor America, Tak Hayasaki, was produced by the company to last riders for “many, many years.” Practical as it may be, the 248cc parallel twin engine is the heart of a machine that is well-planted, comfortable, and reliable.

Harley Softail Line

While at first, I will admit, I was just as upset about the dismissal of Dyna in 2017, the 2018 Harley Softail line that rose from the metaphorical ashes of the Dyna is something that grew on me. The models within the 2018 Harley Softail Line are lighter, more rigid, and redesigned to be slimmer where it matters most. This weight loss increases the speed and agility of the machines and addresses the issues of such things as handling and braking.

The new Harley Softails are also faster (up to 10 percent in the 0-60) than the former High Output Twin Cam 103 engine. They are strong, with the right amount of attention paid in the best possible places, proving that Harley put their heads together and pulled off something we didn’t think was possible: making up for the loss of the Dyna.

Runner-Up: The Announcement of the Indian FTR1200 Custom

There’s nothing quite like when a company fully embraces what made them who they are today, and that’s precisely what Indian Motorcycles did with the announcement of the FTR1200 Custom coming Spring of 2019. Indian’s flat-track racing history inspired the newest model for the Indian Motorcycle lineup, but this racer is built for the street.

The look is that of a sleek and agile machine; it boasts 120 horsepower with a 1230 cc V-twin and 85 ft-lbs of low-end torque. The design is that of something that belongs on the track but keeps that iconic Indian Motorcycle style, and with a sporty riding position and nimble handling, this is one machine that we can’t wait to get our hands on. Bring it on, 2019!
